Muchas veces, se deja ver un tinte un tanto subjetivo aunque es dificil no tenerlo en estos tipos de textos que tampoco alentaron mi lectura. Started reading to become less ignorant in Argentinian history while I spent my summer interning in Buenos Aires.

The book is short, so if you want a good survey of Argentina, this is a useful quick read. Although this book is supposed to be a straightforward introduction to Twentieth Century Argentine History it proved to be incredibly difficult to read.

Much of what Romero focused on would've been interesting and insightful, except his writing style was nothing short of one grabbled statement and interpretation after another that he regurgitated and rehashed repetitively throughout the same paragraph or section within each chapter, over and over again - Pretty similar to what I've just done in Although this book is supposed to be a straightforward introduction to Twentieth Century Argentine History it proved to be incredibly difficult to read.

Nor did it help that Romero strung overly simplistic and stilted college level language together to ram home these muddled concepts and ideas. In the end reading this book made my head hurt, so I quit. Da demasiadas vueltas sobre el mismo tema, y termina mezclando todo.

Doña Petrona, Women, and Food

Actual Rating: Three and a half stars Although this at times is an incredibly dry book, the history it describes is exciting. At one time, by the accident of war, Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world.

Argentinian Independence - 3 Minute History

While America and Europe had millions fighting in World War I, Argentina took advantage of the recent invention of tinned beef to supply both sides with meat during the duration of the conflict. Once peace was declared, the nation's balance of trade suffered and never has recovered. Government has followed government, each beginning with sweeping promises and banners waving, most ending in disgrace or dishonor. One recent president, De La Rua, had to be evacuated from the presidential palace in Olivos by helicopter when pot-banging protestors invaded the grounds. The Argentine peso, which was once pegged to the dollar, now floats free.

When I last visited Argentina in , it stood at 3 pesos to the dollar; now it stands at 4. The Argentinean people are feeling squeezed. Social services are alternately being cut and restored. Vast gangs of cartoneros come into the city by night and rummage through all the trash cans looking for salvageable or recyclable materials.

In the meantime, the endless tweaks to the economy continue. It will be interesting to see what the situation is like in November , when I will spend three weeks in the country. I love the Argentinian people: They are kind and bright, but also torn between long-suffering and impatience. Jun 21, Anil rated it it was ok.

A History of Argentina in the Twentieth Century

This book suffers from the same syndrome as Argentine society at large: hyper-politicization, fetishizing controversy and splitting hairs, and an inability to see the forest for the trees. Insignificant squabbles are scrutinized for pages, while profoundly traumatic episodes are alluded to and passed over in a single dependent clause. Eighty years and six military coups later, we don't need to follow along with every vagary of party politics: we need to know who won and who lost and why, and why it matters to us today. Far be it from me to question the writerly judgment of the famous son of one of Argentina's legendary historians, but I don't see how this book can very well serve either as an informative narrative or as a useful reference.

It seem to me most apt as a microcosm of Argentina, with its fatally convoluted politics. I really don't understand a book about the history of Argentina in the 20th century that barely deals with Evita, and acts as though she is completely unimportant. This made me wonder what else I was missing, and what vital information was left out through the entire book.

I also would have put the mention of the Mothers of the Plaza Del Mayo with the section on the genocide, instead of several pages later where it felt out of place, and seemed as though they appeared out of nowhere instead of r I really don't understand a book about the history of Argentina in the 20th century that barely deals with Evita, and acts as though she is completely unimportant.

I'm still curious as to why Argentina did not join in the world wars. Sep 06, Eric rated it liked it. A comprehensive survey of Argentina in the 20th Century that stresses political and, especially, economic history.
